Hair Cell Generator Potentials
نویسندگان
چکیده
A technique is introduced using a piezoelectric device to stimulate hair cells of a molluscan statocyst while recording their responses intracellularly. Statocyst displacements produced with the technique are calibrated with stroboscopic photography. Properties of the hair cells' response to currents and mechanical stimulation are studied. The hair cell generator potential arises from a conductance increase and, for a certain range, is a logarithmic function of the amplitude of the displacement stimulus.

A common origin of voltage noise and generator potentials in statocyst hair cells
Voltage noise, generator potentials, and hair movements in the Hermissenda statocyst were analyzed. Motile hairs on the cyst's luminal surface moved as rods through +/- 10 degrees Hz when free and at 7 Hz when loaded with the weight of the statoconia (at 120 degrees C). For hair cells oriented opposite to a centrifugal force vector, rotation caused depolarization and increase of voltage noise v...
متن کاملResponses of hair cells to statocyst rotation
A new technique is described for stimulating hair cells of the Hermissenda statocyst. The preparation and recording apparatus can be rotated at up to 78 rpm while recording intracellular potentials. Hair cells in front of the centrifugal force vector depolarize in response to rotation. Hair cells in back of the centrifugal force vector hypoerpolarize in response to rotation. Mechanisms by which...

When stimulated with an appropriate stimulus, the hair cells of the organ of Corti depolarize, causing the release of a neurotransmitter substance, which excites afferent VIIIth nerve dendrites. It is reasonable to hypothesize that excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) generated by the dendrites of the auditory nerve in turn initiate a compound action potential (CAP). The EPSP is thought t...
متن کاملAuditory Nerve Spike Generator Modeled as a Variable Attenuator Based on a Saddle Node on Invariant Circle Bifurcation
Mammalian inner hair cells transduce the sound waves amplified by the cochlear amplifier (CA) into a graded neurotransmitter release that activates channels on auditory nerve fibers (ANF). These synaptic channels then charge its dendritic spike generator. While the outer hair cells of the CA employ positive feedback, poising on Andronov-Hopf type instabilities which make them extremely sensitiv...
متن کاملHair Cell Interactions in the Statocyst of Hermissenda
Hair cells in the statocyst of Hermissenda crassicornis respond to mechanical stimulation with a short latency (<2 ms) depolarizing generator potential that is followed by hyperpolarization and inhibition of spike activity. Mechanically evoked hyperpolarization and spike inhibition were abolished by cutting the static nerve, repetitive mechanical stimulation, tetrodotoxin (TTX), and Co(++). Sin...
